In order to legally keep honey bees in the State of Louisiana, there are few simple requirements.
The information here is not to discourage anyone from keeping bees. It is rather simple to become a beekeeper and the Louisiana Beekeepers Association encourages and will support anyone who wants to become a registered Louisiana beekeeper!

Please scroll down to the lower part of this page and join the LBA!

1. Check with you local city ordinance before acquiring any honey bees. May not be legal in your area! If it is not legal in
your area get with a friend who lives in an area where it is legal.

2. You must register your bees with the Department of Agriculture & Forestry.
Click here to view a printable form, fill it out, then mail it to: Horticulture & Quarantine Programs
                                                                                              P.O. Box 91081
                                                                                              Baton Rouge, La 70821-9081

3. You must follow the "Model Beekeeping Ordinance for Louisiana Local and Municipal Governments".
Basically, this is about being a "good neighbor" with your bees.

It is very important you register each location that you will be keeping your bees with your local Mosquito Control District. Click here to locate your local office. Please do not ignore this advice! The LBA is working very close with the Mosquito Control Association to avoid any unnecessary bee kills from the application of insecticides either by truck or by air.

*On a special note: People wanting to keep bees within the city limits of Hammond, La. must also register their bees with the permit office. Their contact number is (985) 277- 5640, ask for Donna or Nash. No paper work involved and no fees required. They just want to know where the bees are going to be.

The LSU Research & Extension Service has provided a publication titled "Beginning with Bees". Click here to order a publication from the extension service, or click here to view and print out a copy.

“MEMBER GET A MEMBER CAMPAIGN”

Membership in the Louisiana Beekeepers Association (LBA) is a privilege, but more importantly, an obligation. Louisiana beekeepers can only help themselves and their industry by participating in dialogue that sets our state’s beekeeping policies. Anchored in a rich tradition of service, the LBA has always promoted a healthy, productive beekeeping industry. This can only be done through a strong state beekeeping organization. To accomplish this we need the help of more beekeepers. Our current membership consists of less than 50% of the state’s registered beekeepers. That has got to change if we are to remain a voice for Louisiana beekeepers.

You can help us and help yourself by joining the LBA today. More importantly you can recruit other beekeepers into joining the LBA. To help increase our membership we have launched a “MEMBER GET A MEMBER CAMPAIGN.” Simply talk to fellow beekeepers about their participation in their state beekeeping association through membership. In turn, ask their assistance and support in recruiting other LBA members.

Our membership application contains a referral blank to be used to list the member that inspired a new member to join the LBA. An award awaits three individuals ( 1st. 2nd. and 3rd. place) that bring in the most new members in 2013. The award will be presented at our annual convention, which will be held in the St.Tammany Parish area the first weekend in December. Contact any officer or board member if you need more information on promoting membership in the LBA.

Thank you for your support,

David Ferguson
LBA Membership Chairman
